Electricity when moving in Germany: what newcomers should know
Registration, meter reading, basic supply and switching — set up electricity in your new home correctly.
Registration and electricity — do not forget
After moving in, register at the Bürgeramt. In parallel, arrange power for the new address — without a contract, expensive basic supply (Grundversorgung) often applies.
Read the meter on move-in day and note the meter number (Stornummer) on the unit or in the basement.
The grid operator stays the same — you only switch the supplier, not the physical line.
Transfer your contract or switch
Some providers let you move your contract to the new address. Often it pays to compare new tariffs for the new postal code — prices vary by region.
Switching as a new customer is also possible; the new provider handles most paperwork.
On move-out: cancel or transfer the old contract — otherwise you keep paying or stay on basic supply at the old address.
Meter readings: move-in and move-out
Photograph and report meter readings on move-in and move-out — both dates are mandatory.
Missing readings lead to estimated bills and back payments months later.
With subletting or handover: still read the meter yourself even if the landlord has old figures.
Act early to save
The sooner you choose a tariff, the less time you pay basic supply rates.
Compare using your expected annual kWh — rule of thumb: apartment 2,500–3,500 kWh; larger households more.
Welcome bonuses and price guarantees can lower the first year — compare total cost over 12 months.
