Comparing internet contracts in Germany: what matters
Speed, contract term, router, setup fees and availability — a complete guide to choosing your internet plan.
Speed: download and upload
For streaming, home office and several users, 50–100 Mbit/s download is often enough. Upload matters for video calls, cloud backups and gaming — check both values.
Fiber (FTTH) offers high symmetric speeds but is not available everywhere. VDSL is standard in many homes.
Advertised “up to” speeds are maximums — real rates depend on line quality and distance to the exchange.
Contract term and cancellation
Many plans have 24-month minimum terms with auto-renewal. Cancel on time — usually 3 months before end in writing or online.
When moving where the provider has no service, special cancellation may apply — check terms.
Monthly cancellable plans are more flexible but often cost more per month.
One-off costs: setup and router
Watch setup fees, technician visits and router costs (buy or rent). A cheap monthly price plus €150 setup can beat a higher monthly plan with no fee over 24 months.
Rented routers must be returned after the contract — missing returns can lead to charges.
Availability at your address
Not every plan is available at every postal code. Comparing by PLZ shows whether DSL, cable or fiber is possible and what speed is realistic.
In rented flats, sometimes only the landlord’s connection can be used — ask before ordering a second line.
Comparison checklist
Compare total cost over the minimum term: monthly × term + one-off fees + router.
Check privacy, IPv6, static IP only if needed — standard plans with enough download suit most households.
