Internet when moving: connection, router and deadlines
DSL or fiber at your new home — appointments, router, cancellation and interim internet.
Plan early — technicians need time
Order internet as early as possible after your move date. A technician appointment can take 2–4 weeks — without a line, only mobile hotspot helps.
Check availability at the new address: DSL, cable or fiber? Not every plan is available everywhere.
Order ideally 2–3 weeks before move-in — so the line is more likely active on day one.
Cancel the old contract
Cancel the old internet contract on time — usually 3 months before end. When moving where service is unavailable, special cancellation may apply (check terms).
Routers: rented devices must be returned; purchased routers can move with you if compatible with the new connection.
Avoid double payment: order the new line first, then cancel the old contract for the right date.
Bridge period without fixed internet
Mobile hotspot or prepaid data plan bridges the wait — watch for enough GB.
In some new builds fiber is in the building but not activated — ask landlord or property management.
Compare total cost
Watch one-time setup and router fees — not just monthly price. 24-month terms are common.
Comparing by postal code shows realistic speeds and which provider offers the best deal.
Cable and fiber are often faster than DSL — if available, compare prices.
