Opening a bank account: what matters as a newcomer (2026)
Almost no contract works without a current account. Which documents you need, branch vs. direct banks, and what to watch for in fees.
Why you need a current account first
Almost all recurring contracts in Germany — electricity, internet, mobile, rent — are collected by SEPA direct debit from a German account. Without an IBAN you often pay surcharges or cannot get certain tariffs at all.
Your salary is also paid into a current account. After registration it is the second cornerstone everything else builds on.
Branch bank or direct bank?
A branch bank (e.g. Sparkasse or Volksbank) offers in-person advice — handy if you are still learning German or prefer to resolve questions face to face. In return the account more often carries a fee.
A direct bank (online-only) is often free and quick to open, but runs entirely digitally and mostly in German. If you feel confident online, you save on fees long term.
A growing number of smartphone banks let you open an account in several languages within minutes via video identification — a good entry point, as long as you watch cash-withdrawal fees and deposit protection.
Documents and fee check
To open an account you usually need a valid passport or ID, your registration certificate and sometimes the tax identification number. Identity is verified by video-ident (online) or post-ident (at a branch/post office).
Before choosing, check three things: the monthly account fee, the cost of withdrawing cash (which ATMs are free?), and whether a Girocard or only a debit card is included. Some accounts are free only with a monthly incoming payment.
Practical tips
- Have your registration certificate ready — almost every bank requires it.
- Check for free ATMs near you (the bank's network).
- An account without a "monthly incoming payment" condition is more flexible at first.
- A multilingual smartphone bank can ease the start without German.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open an account without a permanent job?
Yes. A current account is not tied to an employment contract. Some premium accounts or overdrafts do require a salary inflow.
Do I already need a Schufa record?
For a simple credit-balance account usually not. The Schufa only matters once you want an overdraft or credit card.
How long does opening take?
By video-ident often just minutes to a few days. In a branch you usually get the paperwork on the spot; the card arrives by post.
